How to check an AI summary in two minutes

September 30, 2026 · 4 min read

Summaries save hours, which is exactly why it's worth checking them. A good one is faithful and complete. A bad one sounds confident and quietly drops the one point you needed.

Check the numbers and names first

Scan the summary for any figure, date or name and find each in the original. This takes a minute and catches the most common error: a detail that's slightly off.

Look for what's missing

Skim the original's headings or first lines. Is every major section reflected? If the article had a section on risks and the summary doesn't mention any, that's a gap.

Watch for confident extras

Summaries sometimes add a tidy conclusion the author never wrote. If a line sounds like a neat wrap-up, find where it came from in the source.

Ask for quotes

If it matters, ask for the exact sentence behind each key point. When there's no sentence to point to, treat the point with suspicion.

A summary is a map, not the territory. Use it to decide where to read closely.
